Application process and timeline

  1. Applicants for a NZDS-Public apply to a nominating authority or a management contractor in their home country.
  2. The nominating authority or management contractor distributes ‘expression of interest’ or preliminary application forms.
    Note: Each country’s deadline to receive completed expression of interest or preliminary application forms differs. Please check the relevant country information sheet.
  3. The nominating authority or management contractor checks applications against the NZDS eligibility criteria. Representatives from NZAID and the nominating authority or management contractor shortlist candidates for study in New Zealand.
  4. Shortlisted candidates are sent the NZDS application form to complete, then return with the supporting documentation.
  5. Deadline for Southeast Asian countries
    The New Zealand Embassy or management contractor in Southeast Asian countries sends completed NZDS-Public applications to NZAID’s Scholarships Unit in Wellington, New Zealand, by 30 June.

    NZAID advises the nominating authority or management contractor of the outcome of the NZDS-Public applications between September and November.

    The New Zealand Embassy or management contractor advises successful candidate of their scholarship offer. Unless notified otherwise, the New Zealand education institution will arrange travel to New Zealand.

  6. Deadline for Pacific countries
    The New Zealand High Commission or management contractor in Pacific countries sends completed NZDS-Public applications for shortlisted candidates to NZAID's Scholarships Unit in Wellington, New Zealand, by 31 August.

    NZAID advises the relevant nominating authority or management contractor of the outcome of the NZDS-Public applications between September and January.

    The New Zealand High Commission or management contractor advises successful candidates of their scholarship offer. Unless notified otherwise, the New Zealand education institution will arrange travel to New Zealand.

    Successful candidates commence their studies around February the following year.
