Samoa | Application process and timeline

NZDS-Open candidates from Samoa apply directly to the Scholarship and Training Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) in Apia. MFAT in Apia:

  1. Advertise scholarships, and distribute and receive 'expression of interest’ or preliminary application forms from late February to late March. 
  2. Check preliminary applications forms against NZDS eligibility criteria, undertake an initial shortlist of candidates, and distribute common application forms mid April.
  3. Receive common application forms early May and check for completion.
  4. Shortlist candidates and send shortlisted applications to be ranked by South Pacific Board of Education Assessment (SPBEA) in Fiji in late May. 
  5. Organise a joint selection committee of Samoan Government, AusAID, and NZAID representatives to approve successful candidates for NZDS-Open scholarships mid June. NZDS application forms are distributed to the 10 successful candidates to be completed and returned (with supporting documentation) by early July.  
  6. Send completed NZDS-Open applications for shortlisted candidates to NZAID’s Scholarships Unit in Wellington, New Zealand, by 31 August. NZAID will advise the New Zealand High Commission of the outcome of the NZDS applications between by December.
  7. Offer successful candidates a NZDS-Open scholarship. The relevant New Zealand education institution assists new students with their travel arrangements to New Zealand.

    Successful candidates commence their studies around February the following year.
